Crisis Response

Responding to Student Emergencies and Crisis

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is committed to fostering an educational climate that is conducive to the academic success and personal development of our students.  The University and Student Affairs recognizes a crisis or emergency incident may occur that could significantly impact a student and / or the larger UNC-Chapel Hill community.  For incidents such as these, the Dean of Students (DOS) office plays a key role in supporting students, coordinating a response, and connecting individuals with support and resources.  While not first responders, the DOS coordinates the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) who can be reached 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

When an emergency occurs, the Dean of Students office or CIRT will typically be notified. If a critical campus-wide situation occurs that warrants an Alert Carolina notification, please reference the method for which you receive these messages and/or visit the Alert Carolina website.

For a crisis requiring an emergency or first responder response, please contact 911 to connect with your local law enforcement agency or UNC Police if you are on-campus.  To connect directly with UNC Police for non-emergencies you may call at 919-962-8100.

Please note, UNC Police is a fully accredited law enforcement agency that provides 24 hour services, including emergency response. EMS will also be dispatched if needed.

Individuals who believe they have experienced or witnessed crimes, University policy violations, or other questionable incidents are encouraged to report these incidents to appropriate University resources. If you have questions about how or whether to report, a representative of the Office of the Dean of Students is available to meet with you. Regardless of the concern, anyone can and is encouraged to contact UNC Police at 919-962-8100.  Non-emergency, anonymous reports can be made to the police department through their Silent Witness reporting form, as well.
