Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT)

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a vibrant and diverse population of over 29,000 students. With a population of this size, we recognize there are occasions when our students may be involved in or impacted by an emergency or crisis situation. To address these situations, or critical incidents, Student Affairs and the Dean of Students office coordinates the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). This team is made up of experienced professional staff members and can be reached 24 hours a day, year round (including University holidays and closures).

When an emergency occurs, the Dean of Students office or CIRT will typically be notified by UNC Police or one of our many campus partners.

It is important to note that for a crisis requiring an emergency or first responder response, please contact 911 to connect with your local law enforcement agency or UNC Police if you are on-campus.

To notify the CIRT of a critical incident:

  • During regular business hours (M-F, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.), when the University is open, please contact the Dean of Students office at 919-966-4042.
  • After hours and when the University is closed, please call UNC Police at 919-962-8100 and ask to speak with a CIRT on-call staff member.

For additional information about CIRT, contact us directly.
